About Me

Melissa
I grew up in a village of 500 people and now live in a beach town of 10 000. Wife to Jeff, Mama to Makenna and Jack. This is my place to share what's up with us, and the place where I sometimes need to pour my heart out about the not so sunshiney moments. This is my happy place. I love you, I love you not....

I love you….

Family heirlooms: To me, an heirloom can mean many things. Anything from a special picture Makenna drew, or a favourite photo, to a more traditional kind of heirloom, like an antique dresser or the family Bible. Today I am referring two different special family treasures.
When my grandma died we were all encouraged to take some stuff from her home that meant something to us. I didn’t take much, some old dishes, collectors spoons, serving spoons, and a quilt. Everyone was encouraged to take a quilt. My grandma quilted and knitted all of her life and there were trunks full of them. I actually took an afghan, that didn’t really “mean” anything to me, I just liked it. I can’t even explain why. Since bringing it home, I have used it almost every day. It is long and narrow, perfect for throwing over my legs. Jeff likes it too. I am already very attached to this blanket.

The other is something new. I love to work in the garden and flowerbeds and a few years ago came across plans in a magazine for a potter’s bench. I passed it on to my father in law and joked to him that the sooner he could make it for me, the better. On a regular visit to his farm in January, he surprised me with this:

He can build anything absolutely anything. He built our stairs, the glider on our front porch, our cradle, a rocking horse for the kids, even their potty seat. Each one is stamped “Handcrafted by Robin Wormington”.

Love it.

This. I have mentioned Jodi’s blog on here before. 2 of my favourite posts this week are this one, for obvious reasons, and this one, because I love the concept, I love what she wrote and how she wrote it, and the inspiration it has given me to write a blog post on the same topic. I am working on it.

Surprises: I love surprises. This weekend I made a birthday cake for the husband of a friend. When I went to drop it off, it was him that opened the door, and he was completely surprised by the cake. I didn't realize it was going to be a surprise, but I loved the look on his face, and I was happy that I made his day a little brighter. I has a similar experience a couple months ago when I delivered a cheesecake to the husband of a different friend. He also had no idea it was coming, and his reaction was one of complete surprise as well. It's a great feeling make someone's day a bit brighter in ways they least expect.
Cayden James Vanderhoek. Born Thursday, April 15 2010. I haven't met you yet, but I love you...Be good to your Mama.

I love you not….

This weather. If it was cold all the time, I could handle that. But this whole "one weekend we're wearing shorts, the next weekend we're wearing mittens" thing, really sucks.

Glee. I tried you guys, I really did. Everyone was raving about it, and telling me I had to watch this show, so I did. And I'm not a fan. Really. I don't get it. But that's okay, because `"Deadliest Catch" starts again this Tuesday night. Phew!

Income taxes. We had to pay this year, for the first year in a long time…I think this is the first time since we've been together that when all was said and done between the two of us at tax time, we had to pay. Boo to that.

Have a good week!

You really should borrow Glee Season 1, Volume 1 from the library. You have to watch it from the start. I am a big Glee fan and I have to admit this past episode wasn't my favourite. I hope it gets as good as it has been. Try it again.

Jeff was watching Deadliest Catch and it was driving me crazy! For seafood!!!!??? That is a freaking crazy job just so people in fancy schmancy restaurants can eat seafood - it isn't life saving or even making our world a better place. Those people are nuts - all in the pursuit of money. ick. Sorry - you can dislike Glee, I dislike Deadliest Catch. We can agree on the weather, k?

lol. I hate seafood. I watch it for the drama. And to remind myself that my life ain't that bad. And one of the captains died a few months ago, so I am looking forward to the tribute. I used to hate this show, but I've been sucked in.
